Striking Terror Denis Lipman Books Reviews

Despite being offered as a young adult novel, the emotions and the goals of the young people in the story are full and passionate. The story is very developed. A very vivid exploration of a modern situation.
A fast paced thriller involving two teens from polically distant communities. Their chance meeting on a buse prevents a suicide bombing and leads to a race against an even larger terrorist attack. Risking alienation from their families they use magic, illusions, and youthful determination to outwit the forces of hate. A thought proving read for teens and adults. Andy
From the first pages, this adult reader was caught in the spell of Micah the magician, a determined and convincing protagonist who must summon his best tricks to save the life of a Palestinian girl against seemingly impossible odds. Other cleverly crafted characters, from the colorful band of street performers who befriend Micah to the girl's vengeful brother, make this book an addictive read. I would recommend this for thriller fans from young adult to not-so-young adults like me.
This is one incredible, fast-paced, intriguing and remarkably well written book, and I had trouble putting it down. Denis Lipman is a wordsmith beyond compare, and his verbiage paints vivid pictures, I felt like I was in a movie theatre. There is a strong moral message of the triumph of character, compassion and cooperation, which is so needed in today's societal climate. This substantive book appeals to a sense of having a higher purpose - something we all can emulate.
Having read A Yank Back to England, also by Denis Lipman, I knew before reading Striking Terror, that this book would be a good read. I, myself a grandmother, was not sure if the young reader category was for me, but I quickly became engaged by the story line, characters, and setting. Never having visited the Middle East, just learning about the present life and times in Israel and Palestine through the eyes of the young characters was quite informative. The descriptive narrative puts you in the picture. The possibility of eminent danger keeps you wondering how children could survive in such precarious situations. Besides a good story, the book does raise one's level of consciousness of what children face on a daily basis in the Middle East.
I got this book for my daughter--she normally reads YA fantasy but was looking for a break from dragons and magic spells--but decided to read it first and I'm glad I did! I loved that the story was set in the "real" world, and not in the future, past or some alternate universe. The plot was very fast-paced and full of twists, and once I started I had trouble putting it down. The two teenagers, Micah and Shireen, seemed very real to me, and I could really feel Shireen's inner conflict as she makes each decision. Others have mentioned this but I too loved how Micah uses magic tricks (illusions not spells) to get himself and Shireen out of trouble throughout the book. Highly recommend it.
It seems like an odd premise for a young adult book - the young Palestinian girl being trained to be a suicide bomber and the British Jewish boy that befriends her are an odd couple indeed and I wondered how the story would end successfully. Lipman does a great job of weaving tense moments and some fun magic, all the while laying the message that violence should not be the answer for our world. It does not present a one-sided viewpoint and that makes the book all the better. I would recommend this to parents who are wondering if their children should read it - it's relevant to the current time and for those of us in Western culture, it provides some insight into a culture very different from our own.
