What an adorable story! A girl with a desire for a dog of her own. A teacher grieving the loss of her own pet. Parents striving to instill in their daughter a sense of responsibility. And a Sunday School teacher who helps bring them all together.Ms. Braun has written a fantastic story and has woven in morals and Bible verses without coming across as "preachy" or condescending. Being an animal lover, I don't usually like stories where an animal dies, but through the devastating circumstances in the book, an even greater miracle takes place. Additionally, the book shows children that God can use them, no matter their age. He only requires their willingness, which Megan is willing to offer.
The book was easy to read and understand, yet entertaining enough to keep the attention of less-eager readers. I recommend it for children of all ages since even the younger ones who may not be able to read it for themselves would enjoy the story itself. Yes, if I were still teaching, this book would definitely be on the shelf in my classroom.

"A Dog Called Naaman" blends a Bible story into an enjoyably gentle children's story. Megan, the young heroine, dreams of a owning a dog. Meanwhile, she is learning at home and in Sunday School to apply the Bible to her life in practical ways. One Sunday the story of Naaman and his little servant girl inspire Megan to try to help her school teacher, grieving over the death of her own beloved dog. In trying to help others, she ends up earning the desire of her heart.
I love the way the author, Susan Barnett Braun, weaves Christianity naturally in to the lives of the children in her stories in a way that millions of children can relate to. It's hard to find wholesome reading material that kids will enjoy, and "A Dog Called Naaman," along with Ms. Braun's previous book, "Sophie, Pay Attention! (Rhoda - And You Too)!" is just that.
A Dog Called Naaman is a sweet story about a little girl named Megan who longs for her own dog. One day her teacher brings her Corgi into the classroom for a visit. The visit only intensifies Megan's desire to have her own dog. Megan hears the story of Naaman and his servant and decides to try to apply it to her own life. The author does a good job of bringing Christian values into the story without it being too forceful. The story is well-written and enjoyable. It is a short chapter book that will keep the attention of early readers. I highly recommend it for ages 6-9.
Sharing Bible stories with children is a wonderful way to teach kids the principles and truths found in God's Word. It's even better when we can make application to the children's life. A Dog Named Naaman is a story about a young girl and her desire for a dog. While she is wishing and hoping for a dog, she learns how to help her teacher who has recently lost a dog. She hears the Bible story of the servant girl who helps Naaman and she figures out how she can help her teacher find comfort and a few other surprises along the way.
This book is beautifully written and is perfect for kids in 1st through 6th grades. I love how it shares the Bible story and how each child in the story thinks about and applies the story to the situations she is facing in her life. Thanks Susan for allowing me to read through your beautiful book, it is an excellent resource to share with children.
