The book begins with thirteen-year-old Barnaby Fletch in London, in the late 1700's, where he lives on his wits, on the streets, and in the shadowy corners of a church. His adventures and experiences there are well told. They lead to his getting himself transported to Botany Bay, to avoid a terrifying thug that he has upset.
The horror and monotony of the voyage made me feel like putting the book aside, but I was drawn back by curiosity about Barnaby and the other characters on the the ship; some strange, some interesting, and many horrifying.
Botany Bay turns out to be not as welcoming as Barnaby had hoped.
The new colony is described with colour and feeling. Barnaby's adventures among the lives of its occupants; migrant, transported, and native, are fascinating.
My urge to read on increased steadily as Barnaby's tale unfolded, right to the last paragraph.

Rather too many incredible coincidences at the end. OK read.
Not a very interesting story I got about halfway then closed down
Very well written story with great historical content. Keen to read the sequel - I presume that there is one coming...
Nice read!
A vivid picture of life in the UK for the dispossessed and in Australia when the first convicts were sent there.
While not quite as fast paced or thrilling as the Tomorrow series, this book has solid characters and an interesting plot.
Interesting and enjoyable read. This book is an easy read and the character of Barnaby is very captivating. I am looking forward to the sequel.
